Chapter 8
âGabriel!â The voice snatched him from drowsy rest hours later. It startled Hana too, who jumped up off her bench so fast that she dropped Heaven who squealed indignantly at her. Gabriel jerked upward from his spot on the floor near the boarded-up hole in the wall, his chosen sentry point.
The two had dozed off after hours of practice. He thrust a hand toward Hana, beckoning her then turned to carefully and quietly pry the boards loose. When Hana picked up the guinea pig and reached his side, her eyes wide with fear; he whispered to her.
âIâm going to greet my brothers. When weâre talking, I want you to sneak out and go find Mister Hasegawa next door. Stay with him unless I call out to run. Then run.â
Hanaâs frightened eyes locked on him, a flickering flame of defiance at leaving him behind was obvious in her gaze. Yet the girl only nodded. She huddled there by the boards; furry critter gathered in her arms again. Always on the run. Gabriel wished he could give her a peaceful life, taking up his White Hare sword and rising to walk toward the front, double doors.
Michael, Uriel, and Barachiel stood on the sidewalk facing the front of the old church. Their sleek, black, utility vehicle parked behind them with the motor still running and the headlights brightly illuminating down the street. Michael turned slowly; his face was expressionless as he nodded to Barachiel. Both men wore full suits, tailored armor in the same fashion as Gabriel.
Barachielâs attire was more flamboyant than Michaelâs suit, with gold cufflinks fastening cuffs embroidered in swirling designs that matched the collar of his shirt underneath the suit jacket. Michael only wore plain white.
Uriel was different, he dressed in cultural fashion. Designer jeans, big, brown boots with flames etched into their quarter and a tank top that more showed off his powerful physique than protected his body. Over this, he wore a hooded jacket that bore a stylized picture of an Angel in full white regalia and broad, white-gold wings smiting a red, horned devil.
Barachiel the Charmer stepped forward, leaving Uriel to grimace with impatience behind him. âSeventh Brother! Give us the girl, please. The game has been exciting for Second Brother and I, but Fifth Brother is angry. He was disappointed that you werenât waiting for him at the temple! Itâs time to come home now!â A patronizing tone, playfully speaking from lips that couldnât help but show amusement.
Uriel, on the other hand, turned around and threw open the vehicle door behind them. He drew out his great axe, a single curved blade as big as two menâs heads with five rings embedded into the back that led down to a slightly bent handle which ended in a deadly sharp point. Uriel propped the axe on his shoulder, even though the rings were sharpened too and could cut as easily as the business end.
âNow!â He bellowed.
The three men waited, two with patience and one without, until the groan of the wooden double doors drew their eyes.
